'Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.'

MfL Curriculum Design Statement

Curriculum Intent

We employ a Specialist Teacher to deliver a MFL programme of study from Year 3 through to Year 6. Spanish is taught in our school using Speekee. This is a comprehensive scheme of work with clear learning outcomes with the National Curriculum at the core.

Our intent is to build a MFL curriculum which develops a love of language learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills enabling children to access the wider curriculum. This will prepare children to be global citizens now and in their future roles within a global community.

We aim to provide all Key Stage 2 children with the appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding in order to promote their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and thus prepare them for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences in later life.

Curriculum Implementation

Spanish will be taught using Speekee. The specialist teacher will deliver lessons based on the Spanish language videos, songs and activities and in addition will use their own subject knowledge and language learning experience to broaden the provision. Children will regularly engage in conversation in the target language and ask and answer questions based on what they have learned.

Pronunciation will be accurate and children will be encouraged to listen attentively to spoken language regularly and show understanding by joining in and responding appropriately. Children will gain confidence speaking aloud in groups, pairs and where appropriate individually in order to present their ideas orally and describe people, places and things.

Basic grammar will be taught including the masculine and feminine forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs. Similarities and differences will be drawn between English and Spanish where possible.

Activities will be used enabling children to read carefully and show their understanding of words, phrases and simple writing in the target language. Furthermore, they will be expected to write in Spanish and create their own sentences, conversations and ideas. These conversations will then be presented orally and accurate pronunciation and intonation will be encouraged by the teacher. Children will feel secure and confident enough to present their ideas to the whole class and where appropriate other members of staff through songs, rhymes, poems and stories.

Curriculum Impact

Children will be assessed continuously through their oral presentation of language. Children will be given the opportunity to monitor their own language acquisition through regular vocabulary tests and role-play opportunities. Children will develop a lifelong love of MFL as a result of regularly conversing with peers and teachers in the target language and will build on their knowledge throughout the Key Stage. The skills taught will provide a solid foundation for future language learning.
