Sports Premium

The Association for Physical Education, in its mission states clearly that ‘PE should be at the heart of school life’.

With our PE funding at Richard Wakefield: A de Ferrers Trust Academy, we aim to achieve this by raising the profile of PE throughout our school. Making links with our Academy values, we aim to use PE and Sport in the school to help children to make good choices that will have a positive impact on their lives now and in the future, be kind through healthy competition and encouragement and to work hard at the sports and activities they undertake both during the curriculum time and outside of it.

In order to achieve this, we plan to:

  1. Engage all pupils in regular physical activity.
  2. Raise the profile of PE and sport across the school as a tool to support whole school improvement.
  3. Increase confidence, knowledge, and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
  4. Broaden children’s experiences of a range of sports and activities and create links with clubs and organizations outside of school life.
  5. To increase participation in competitive sport through the School Sports Partnership and our Academy Trust.

Since the Government PE funding has come in to action, from the legacy of the 2012 London Olympics, PE at Richard Wakefield has greatly improved. All children are given the opportunity to undertake an extra half an hour of physical activity a day, through the Golden Mile programme, active break and lunchtimes, PE lessons, as well as a variety of after school clubs. We are also attending more inter school competitions than ever through the East Staffordshire School Sports Partnership (http://www.eaststaffssport.co.uk/about-us/) and have increased the amount of intra school competition within the school curriculum.

Additionally, we would also like to inspire more competition between the children through internal and external school competitions. We will be using some of our funding on transport to ensure that the children can access these opportunities. As a result of healthy competition situations, it is hoped that children will use their skills of working together and apply it to other areas of the curriculum to improve team work skills. We also believe that it is important that the children improve their core body skills and strengthen their understanding of physical education and what it means to them, which will be a focus through many of our PE lessons.

We continue to train year 6 pupils as Young Leaders to run clubs for the children at lunchtime which inspires competition with themselves and other children.

In order to achieve these targets, we work closely with the East Staffordshire Schools Sports Partnership, Burton Albion, Amaven and the de Ferrers Trust to improve the knowledge and understanding of our staff. This is achieved through CPD meetings as well as sessions that are team taught between teaching staff and external coaches.

Over the last few years, since the introduction of the Sports Premium money we have really raised the profile of PE and sports within the school.  During the academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15, we achieved the Bronze School Games Award and in the year 2015/16 we achieved the Silver Award.  In the year 2016/17, 17/18 and 18/19 we were proud and delighted to have been awarded the Gold Award, which shows our commitment to improving our standards in this area.

We have also used some of our funding to allow the opportunity for extra swimming sessions in year 6, as well as those already happening in year 4, to try and get as many children swimming 25m as possible by the end of KS2. This percentage is now at the highest it has ever been.

Through baseline sessions (with Amaven) we can see a huge improvement in the fitness of our children in many areas such as balance, flexibility, agility throughout the year. This also allows us to target those who may need extra help in these areas. The programme also allows for children to access their online log ons at home with an adult to aim towards the extra half an hour that children should be carrying out outside of school hours.
