History Curriculum Design Statement

Curriculum Intent

The core of our history curriculum is the National Curriculum. We have worked with our trust partner schools to create a progression of skills grid from Year 1 through to Year 6 that provides a logical sequence and progression of skills development for pupils. We then have a topic overview for the year. Our final element of planning is the knowledge organisers which provide medium term planning for each term or half term. From these we create our short term plans. Our intent is that our teaching of history will help pupils gain a secure knowledge and understanding of Britain and the wider World’s past. We aim for it to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past and for it to enable children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, consider arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Through the teaching of history, we endeavour to teach children to understand people’s lives from the past, the process of change, the diversity of societies and identify connections with their own lives.

Curriculum Implementation

History will be taught during whole class lessons in an inclusive environment, celebrating differences and experiences. Teachers will use the DeFerrers Trust history skills progression map. These skills will be used to inform planning and using these skills and knowledge, enrichment and learning opportunities can then be included. Teachers will use the History Association website for up to date information. History lessons will focus on developing historical skills and children working as historians. Children will learn through memorable experiences, allowing them to connect with historical concepts, learning about history in a creative and active way. Richard Wakefield pupils will develop a sense of time – with a coherent, chronological understanding of history. Children will understand the importance source work can have on our understanding of the past and the influence that it has had on our lives.

Curriculum Impact

Lessons will incorporate the skills progression grid, which will be used as indicators when assessing children termly using the school tracking system. Skills will be taught across phases and by the end of each key stage, children will have a broad understanding of skills and historical knowledge. Children will be assessed from work produced and knowledge gained form practical, memorable experiences. Pupils will have developed a curiosity about the world through an understanding of the past and ready to develop their knowledge further into KS3.
