Physical Education Curriculum Design Statement

Curriculum Intent

At Richard Wakefield we aim to inspire children to develop a love of physical activity, exercise and sport whilst also providing opportunities to allow them to grow as athletes. Through quality physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our children wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We want our students to understand how to live a healthy lifestyle and see the benefits it has to their everyday experiences. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Curriculum Implementation

There is one hour of timetabled PE each week for every pupil in KS1 and KS2. This allows pupils to develop themselves as a whole person; build a sound knowledge of basic skills; develop the values of the school’s vision and to build a positive relationship with physical health. Additionally, we offer a daily activity so that the students partake in at least fifteen minutes of activity every morning. Lessons are planned to cover the National Curriculum, considering the importance of both the breadth and depth of learning. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. Our curriculum is a skill-based and gives opportunities to develop and improve those skills within the different sports that we offer. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. We aim to make this an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being for students of all abilities. In KS1 and LKS2, we provide specialist PE teaching using Sporting PB – a service which also aims to work collaboratively with staff to improve the development and confidence of staff as PE teachers.

Curriculum Impact

Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Richard Wakefield, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives. They will have a range of strategies for solving problems and show resilience to keep going when they find things difficult. Pupils will understand the benefits of working in different group dynamics. They will have the confidence to lead and support others. They will understand the importance of physical activity in a wider context and possess the skills and enthusiasm to develop their learning further.
